In Case of Ethernet or WiFi devices on mac OSX are no longer functional due to corrupted configuration follow the follwing steps:

1) From the finder go to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration (on boot volume)

2) Delete NetworkInterfaces.plist and preferences.plist and restart

3) Login goto  system Preferences ->Nerwork (this will populate all of the discovered devices on the left hand side pane.

or

Run this command (on boot volume), and confirm with y:

rm /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist

If the ethernet device shows a red dot then try using different ethernet cable and /or plugging into different port.
